Nickel Creek on the Assiniboine River

Jul. 8/13

The days before the Winnipeg Folk Festival are typically spent strategizing and mapping out how to see all the acts you're anticipating and assembling your arsenal for festival survival/'Guerrilla Jamming'. However, this year has been a little different. My festival experience has started four days prior with a series of workshops and sessions with four of this years acts, including: Sean and Sara Watkins (formerly of Nickel Creek with Chris Thile), Tony Furtado (no relation to Nelly, but a damn fine slide guitarist and banjo picker), and Dan Bern (a wonderful writer and performer). Each of these artists has brought a wealth of knowledge and offered guidance and perspectives on many elements of creating music.

These performers are guaranteed to satisfy those hungry Folk Festival appetites this year, be sure to check them all out! (below: Pickin' and singing with Sean and Sara Watkins)

From Blake to Rice

Jul. 4/13

Well summer is now upon us. I have been chipping away at new songs and the pre-production for the upcoming debut Kevin Roy record. I am beginning to assemble a tremendous team of local musicians, engineers/producers, and so on for the project. It's a bit like my 8 year old self dumping that old suitcase of lego on the floor...

...not sure if there is a segue between lego and Tony Rice. Anyway, he is a living guitar legend. He has set a bar to which all flatpickers must be compared. I recently found a little time to test out some picking on one of my favorite songs, Tony Rice's cover of Norman Blake's Church Street Blues. Hope you enjoy!

Welcome to kevinroymusic.com!

Jun. 16/13

I am excited to announce that the Kevin Roy website is now up and running. Stay tuned for updates on recording, touring, and general information as I embark upon a chapter of my life driven by music, writing, and the open roads.

Much thanks to the Jonathan Carewick for designing this new home on the web, as well, thanks to Anthony Kost and Shawn Tester for doing a fantastic job taking photos for the site.

Kevin
